All edges gilt. 8vo (11.4 x 17.5cm). Hinges sound. Original endpapers restored at gutters. This is the 1st edn (Madan 22; Almack 45; ESTC R224767) belonging to the 2nd group of edns identified by Madan (though see also Lynch, 2007, ‘Religious Identity, Stationers’ Company Politics, and Three Printers of “Eikon Basilike”‘, Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, 101.3, 289). This 2nd group of edns derives from a separate source than that used by the first edns pub. by Royston: a MS apparently given by the king to Edward Simmons. They were set up from this MS by William Dugard for the publisher Francis Eglesfield, and were the first edns to include supplementary materials, including prayers used by the king and an account by Princess Elizabeth of the king’s final words to her. Issued together under a separate t.p. was the Apophthegmata. Also inc. for the first time was the ‘Explanation’ of William Marshall’s emblematic frontis. Most of the additions were incorporated into later Eikon edns, making Dugard responsible for its ‘most widely adapted and enduring reshapings and amplifications’. He was also ‘the only printer of the dozens of interregnum editions bold enough to identify himself on the title-page’ – indeed, he was arrested immediately after the publication of this ‘sensational edition’ (Lynch, 307, 299). Eikon is collated complete, with the 3 illus. called for in Madan: the folding frontis (Hind plate D; Madan frontis 3, ‘the finest of Marshall’s own designs’ & the 4th of 7 versions), a frontis. port of King Charles (Madan 36: ‘etched by (Wenceslaus) Hollar in 1641’), and a port. of Prince Charles (facing R3). Marshall frontis. has closed tear (c. 6.5cm), slightly affecting image; both it and Hollar frontis. were ‘designed for this edn’ (Madan). Pencil inscr. dated 1811 to front free endpaper; near-identical inscr. in pencil and pen to blank r. of folded frontis. Blank inside fold of the frontis has pen inscr. in old hand: ‘The genuineness of his eikon has been contested tho’ on what authority I cannot say -‘: presumably referring to the controversy over authorship. In the same hand on the following blank endpage are notes on Charles, from ‘His Conduct in the beginning of his reign was tyrannical’ to ‘He was a man of polite taste’. Pencil inscr. to t.p.; pen initials to rear of t.p. Loss to centre t.p. (c. 1.5cm), where material (wax seal?), was removed from verso. BOUND WITH: 1) The papers which passed at New-Castle. Complete: (4), 58, (2)pp. Last leaf blank. Frontis as called for: port. of King with globe signed ‘Guil: Marshall sculp:’. Madan records as most often found with Royston’s edn 3, variant b, of the Eikon. Madan 98; ESTC R213547. 2) Monumentum Regale. Imprint: ‘Printed in the Year 1649’. Complete: (2),46, (2)pp. Last leaf blank. T.p. & pp. 2-3 in red & black. Anon.; ESTC ascr. to John Cleveland, though Madan queries. Madan: ‘printed by Grismon, no doubt for Royston’; sometimes sold with the Eikon. Madan 106; ESTC R208853. 3) Loyalties tears. By J.B. Imprint: ‘Anno Dom. 1649’. Incomplete: (2), 10pp. (ESTC has (4), 11, (9)pp.). Ascr. to John Birkenhead. ESTC R209196. This likely contemporary assembly brings together Dugard’s first printing of the Eikon with further commemorative material most often found associated with Royston edns, further enlarging the Dugard edn, which itself ‘marked a turn to the sacramental – or perhaps more fully realized the phenomenon of memorialization that was Eikon Basilike’ (Lynch 307). This edn of the Eikon is very rare: ‘it is probable that the bulk of it was seized at the press, at the time of Dugard’s arrest’ (Madan). Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request.
