Description
The third volume appeared in 1816. Full original tree calf, black gilt spine labels and gilt ruling to spines. Small bookplate to inside front boards. Endpapers foxed but uncracked at gutters. Published anonymously; author identified from Worldcat. John Fletcher (d. 1845), Roman Catholic priest and religious writer. Fletcher was one of the professors at St Omer when the masters and students were imprisoned from 1793-95 as a result of the French Revolution; upon their release Fletcher went with them to England, where he was ordained and became known as a writer and translator of religious works and devotional manuals. ‘The Roman Catholic lawyer and historian Charles Butler was much impressed by Fletcher’s sermons; although he felt that they were “less calculated for the pulpit than the closet”, he compared them to the homilies of St Francis of Sales, and praised “their mild, unambitious eloquence, their pure morality, and their persuasive reasoning”‘ (ODNB, quoting Butler, Historical Memoirs, 2.321). Robust packaging. Tracking is always added to USA orders. It can be added to other overseas orders on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs.
