Description

Original blue cloth. Dustwrapper price clipped and edgeworn with 1/2cm lost at ends of spine but protected in a removable clear plastic sleeve. Spine faded and slightly darkened. Page edges toned. Scarce title, especially with dustwrapper. A revised edition of the first part of Budge’s 1904 translation of the ‘Book of Paradise’, a collection of Syriac translations of Greek works compiled by the 7th century monk and philosopher, lexicographer and translator Enanisho or ʼAnan Isho (diacritics omitted). The second part was simultaneously published in Budge’s revised translation as ‘The wit and wisdom of the Christian fathers of Egypt’ (1934). Budge’s revised translation was intended to provide ‘a popular edition of ʼAnan Isho’s great work in a handy form’, with a new introduction that outlines ‘the great value and importance of ʼAnan Isho’s Syriac Recension for the study of Christian monasticism in Egypt’ (p. vi). Robust packaging. Tracking is always added to USA orders. It can be added to other overseas orders on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs.
