Original polished full speckled tan calf, gilt roll framing boards. Raised bands and gilt decor to spine; spine label missing. Blind decor to board edges. Folio (23.4 x 35.5cm). Small loss to base and top of spine. Starting at top of spine over front and rear hinges (c. 6cm). Hinges firm. Wear to board corners. Minor marking and rubbing to boards. All edges speckled red. Bookplate to inside front board. Crease to front free endpaper. Engraved head- and tail-pieces, and decorated initials, throughout. Text proper printed in double columns. Occasional scattered foxing. The first of three volumes of The Church History of England from 1500 to 1688 (1737-42), the magnum opus of Charles Dodd, born Hugh Tootel (1672-1743), Roman Catholic priest and historian. Born in Lancashire, Dodd studied at the English College in Douai, adopting the name Charles Dodd to protect his father from being fined under the Penal Laws for sending his son to the continent for his education. Dodd took nearly twenty years to prepare the material for his Church History, beginning in 1718: it was intended in part as a Catholic response to Gilbert Burnet’s The History of the Reformation of the Church of England (1679-1715). The work was written at Harvington Hall, Worcestershire, where Dodd served as assistant chaplain then chaplain to the Throckmorton family. Despite the Brussels imprint, it is ‘believed to have been printed in England, as both type and paper are English made’ (ODNB). ESTC T90058. Robust packaging. Tracking is always added to USA orders.
