~Original blue sand-grained cloth, spines and front boards decorated in gilt. Spine of vol. I leans forward vey slightly. Scarcely visible sunning to spines. Mild wear to board corners and to base and top of spine; vol. II just barely starting near top of spine over front and rear hinge. Hinges sound. Endpapers uncracked at gutters. No ownership marks. Occasional light foxing; creases to a couple of tissue guards. 32 full-page plates and 32 in-text vignettes. Vol. I pp. 211-14 have one cord slightly loose at bottom gutter. 2 pages of advertisements at end of vol. II. The first edition in book form. Without obvious stab-holes (so Sadleir’s ‘second issue’ of the first edition, not bound up from parts), with first edition points including ‘Illustrations by George H. Thomas’ to t.p.; ‘The right of Translation is reserved’ to t.p. verso in both vols; perfect ‘D’ on p. 157, vol. I, and “Crawley” on l. 21, p. 298, vol. II. Trollope’s sixth and final work in his ‘Chronicles of Barsetshire’, first published in thirty-two sixpenny parts between December 1866 and July 1867; this first edition in book form was published in March and July 1867. ‘I regard this as the best novel I have written’, said Trollope in his Autobiography (1883, p. 209), and many then and since have agreed: ‘Of its own light kind there has been no better novel ever written than The Last Chronicle of Barset’, wrote a contemporary reviewer (Hutton, The Spectator, 2037, p. 780).
