Description

~Full original frond-grained green cloth binding. Gilt decor and lettering (”gage d”amitie”, i.e. ”token of friendship”) to centre front board, gilt lettering and ornate decor to spine. Small shelf-mark label to base spine, spine slightly faded. Mild wear to base and top of spine. Tips of corners slightly pushed in. All edges gilt. Folio (21.8 x 28.4cm). Hinges sound. Original primrose yellow endpapers, uncracked at gutters. Two leaves (pp. 193-94 & 201-02) not fully attached to stitching at gutter. Very minor age-browning and foxing throughout. With 3 full-page plates (inc. frontis), and 34 plates with two illustrations each (68 in total, as called for). All plates have tissue guards. The spectacular plates, all crisp and clear, are almost all after drawings by Thomas Allom (1804-1872), architect and artist, who conducted many sketching tours for Fisher, Son, & Co between 1828 and 1845. A few plates are after drawings by George Pickering (d. 1857), Yorkshire watercolourist. Author of text (Thomas Rose, topographer) taken from Worldcat. The third and last of three vols in ”The Northern Tourist” series, which was published between 1833-36. A beautiful set of illustrations of the north of England, with engaging commentary, from the golden age of nineteenth-century travel illustration. ~Robust packaging. All UK orders trackable, others on request.
