Description
~DATE RANGE: 1855-56 ~Full contemporary dark blue morocco, gilt and double blind fillets framing boards. Low raised bands, ornate gilt decor, and gilt lettering to spine. Gilt decor to board edges and turn ins. 4tos (19 x 25.9cm). Mild rubbing to board and spine edges. All edges gilt. Hinges sound. Marbled endpapers uncracked at gutters. Title pages printed in red & black. With family tree of ‘Timothy Crowther Manchester 1874’ carefully inscribed to page at front of vol. I provided for this purpose, with individual family members noted in hand-drawn roundels. Dates range from 1756 to 1900; the family tree draws on an earlier version, handwritten on a blank leaf of a 12mo bible which is included (inc. the rest of the gathering) as a loose insert in vol. IV. Frontis per vol. Profusely illustrated with full-page plates, in-text illustrations, and maps, some folding. Some illus are after old masters; others illustrate archaeological finds, Middle Eastern topography, architecture, customs, etc.: Kitto, who had lived in Baghdad as part of a missionary party and wrote extensively on scripture and the history of Palestine, did much to bring alive the geographical and cultural context of the bible for his mid-Victorian audience. His Pictorial Bible was originally published in monthly parts from 1835-8; this 1855-56 edition was one of several reprints. Attractive fresh copy. Herbert 1838. ~Robust packaging.
