Description

~DATE RANGE: 1763-64. ~Original full speckled dark brown calf, raised bands, gilt decor, and brown gilt label per spine. Blind decor to board edges. 12mos (11.5 x 18cm). A little wear to extremities: just starting over front hinge to vols IV & V. Chipping to spine labels of vols I & III, slight chipping to top spine in vols III & IV & to bottom spine of vol. II. Scratch to front board of vol. I. All edges speckled red. Hinges sound. Recent bookplate of legal scholar P. R. Glazebrook and armorial bookplate of James Farrell to inside front board of all vols. The Farrells were a distinguished Irish family from Longford; the owner of these vols is likely the James Farrell who became a successful financier and proprietor of the Black Pitts brewery in Dublin, described in 1790 as ‘the principal salesman of Smithfield, and the greatest factor in the kingdom’ (. C.T. Bowden, A Tour through Ireland (Dublin, 1791), pp. 46-7). Farrell’s initials are also in gilt to each spine (‘I F’) and his signature in pencil to free rear endpaper of vol. I. Title pages printed in red & black. Factotum initials. Text printed in double columns. Minor worm damage from p. 469 of vol. I to rear, mostly pinprick, with very slight impact on text. Slight worm damage to rear endpapers of vol. II at gutter, with pinprick hole though rear board. No imprint, although Herbert suggests Dublin as place of publication and vol. IV has 1p. of bookseller’s advertisements to rear: ‘Catalogue of Books, Published by Richard Fitzsimons, at the King’s-Head in High Street’. Indeed published by ‘P. Lord and R. Fitzsimons of Dublin, who later claimed the merit for this “new edition in five volumes”, adding that it had been “received with applause”‘; this was ‘(a)pparently the first complete edition of the Vulgate to be printed in Ireland’ (Fenning, ‘Dublin Imprints of Catholic Interest: 1760-69,’ Collectanea Hibernica 42, 2000, p. 98). ‘This Bible contains the second edition of Challoner’s revision of the Douay Old Testament and the fourth edition of his revision of the Rheims New Testament’ (Herbert). ESTC T93000, Blom 1449, Herbert 1156. ~Robust packaging. Tracking can be added to overseas orders on request.
